Too Edit or Not To Edit

I know that as National Novel Month Writers we are not supposed to edit anything until after the month has passed and we have had time to recover from all the writing that we did during the month. We are supposed to wait until our fingers are healed and your minds have returned for the "fire bad; tree pretty" land. That is what we are supposed to do.
However, sometimes you write something that just screams "EDIT ME" and other times you start thinking and you realize that you can fluff up a part and make it deeper. Get more into the character and you are screaming "LET ME EDIT".

That is were I am right now. I love how my novel is going but at the same time I think I can really work the first chapter and pull more out of my beginning. I think I can let the reader into more of the mind of one of the main characters and grab them just a touch more.

So that is the question. Do I edit what I have and add to my word count and my story or do I stick with the guidelines and wait until December, maybe even January and run the risk of losing what I have in my mind right now? I think I say to heck with the rules. After all they were made to be broken and do what is best for the novel.

That said I am off to edit; I think.
